DAY 1: ARRIVAL ALTA

DAY 2: ALTA

Breakfast at the hotel. At 10.00: Pick up from your hotel for a 2,5 hour “taste of dogsledding” tour. Drive to the husky farm about 20 min. outside of Alta. You will receive brief and precise instructions about how to drive a dog sled before we enter the dog enclosure, where many happy Alaskan huskies are waiting to meet you. Each dog has its own kennel with its name on it. You will be given a list of the names of the dogs that will be in your dog team, and then it’s time to get started. The harnesses hang in fixed places, so it is just a matter of finding the right dog. In this way you can get the dogs ready on your own. When everything is ready the dogs will be eager to set off. We open the gates and head into the forest, where it is tranquil and we can enjoy the enthusiastic dogs, the weather and the nature. One of the guides lead the way and you follow behind. During this trip, we drive in the forest, open landscape and beside Alta River or on frozen sections. Two persons ride per sled; one musher and one who sits on the sled. We stop and swap places on the way. After a while we return to the kennel. The dogs need to be returned to their respective kennels, and you help with this. Then it’s time to relax around an open fire with a hot drink and home baking to eat. Transfer back to the hotel. You have the afternoon free. At 19.00: Tonight, join an excursion to go hunting for the Northern Lights. You will be picked up from the hotel and transferred to a place outside the city where you will be served a nice soup and enjoy a briefing about the plans for the night. To optimize our chances of experiencing the Northern Lights, we head to areas with little or no light pollution. We travel by minibus in search of an area with starry sky and good views. If the weather conditions in Alta are poor, we head elsewhere. This could mean a drive of up to 200 km, either along the coast, fjords or in the inland of Finnmark. We make regular stops to check the conditions and, if conditions permit, take photos. We then gladly continue in search of new, exciting and nice locations, either to find new photo subjects or – if the conditions are challenging – clear weather. End the tour at the hotel. Duration 4,5-6 hours. Overnight at Thon Hotel Alta.

DAY 3: ALTA

Breakfast at the hotel. At 10.00: Pick up from the hotel for a snowshoeing tour that includes icefishing and lunch. Snowshoeing is a fun and easy activity and it is a great way to explore the snow-covered Arctic landscape. It is the Norwegian outdoor tradition in a nutshell! On this four-and a half hour trip we head for an ice-covered lake where we drill a hole and try icefishing. We will prepare a hot lunch on an open fire and serve it in a Sami lavvu. Experience the peace and tranquility, the colors and the forms- and perhaps a moose, hare or fox. If you are lucky, you catch a trout or an Arctic char! Thermo suits and snowshoes are included. After the tour transfer back to the hotel. Duration of the tour: 4,5 hours. Afternoon free and in the evening possibility to go hunting the northern lights again on an optional excursion (not included) Overnight at Thon Hotel Alta

DAY 4: ALTA

Breakfast at the hotel. At 10.45: Morning transfer from Alta to Sorrisniva (20 min). At 11.30: Meet with your guide to start a 2,5-hour snowmobile tour. This tour will give you the opportunity to experience the Arctic light and nature while driving with snowmobiles from Sorrisniva through the Alta Valley and up to the Finnmark plateau. The sun and the Arctic light vary during the winter season and provide a wonderful light on the horizon. This special light can be seen in a better way once we go up on the Finnmark plateau with its wide, white snow-covered expanse. Two persons sharing a snowmobile (own snowmobile against a supplement). Before the tour starts the guide will give you driving and safety instructions. The tour starts just outside the Igloo Hotel and follows the snowmobile trail through the forest and up to the vast snow-covered Finnmark Plateau, one of Europe’s last wilderness areas. Enjoy the rest of the day in the cozy environment of the Sorrisniva Snow hotel, the world´s northernmost Ice hotel, which is built every year with a new theme. While staying at the snow and ice hotel you can experience the nature around, relax in a warm atmosphere in the living room and enjoy dinner in the restaurant (two course dinner country style is included) Spend the night in a room made of snow and ice, where you will explore the contrast between the cold around you and the cozy sleeping bag which keeps you warm during the whole night (public bathroom, wardrobe and changing room + Sauna). Included is an extreme sleeping bag good for minus 25 celcius, pillow, morning sauna incl. towels (7-10 am), breakfast buffet.
